Our Story

Being the Change We Wish to See in the World

ROCKY POND PRESS

Founded in December 2016, Rocky Pond Press was established for the sole purpose of publishing There Is Something About Edgefield: Shining a Light on the Black Community through History, Genealogy and Genetic DNA. Achieving this objective, Rocky Pond Press has expanded its purpose.

History is written by the victor. The group who dominates a society shapes, influences, and controls what is taught, what is reported, and what is remembered. The stories of the oppressed, in contrast, are ignored, overlooked, or disregarded.

Sadly, in 2017, racial tensions continue to persist in the United States, more than 150 years after the end of the Civil War. Unlike South Africa, there was no Truth and Reconciliation Commission to educate the citizenry about the past and transition the citizenry to a post-apartheid, democratic society. For a host of reasons, the Reconstruction Era failed to transition America, particularly the former States of the Confederacy.

Americans have a tendency to note the wrongs of other nations (such as Germany, Japan, or Turkey) but fail to face the truth about our country’s wrongs. We wear “rose tinted” glasses. This is best exemplified by Schoolhouse Rock!, animated shorts using songs to educate children about grammar, science, history, and multiplication tables. The shorts on American history boasted proudly about the founding of this nation (“No More King” and “The Shot Heard Round the World”) but never mentioned the institution of slavery.

Rocky Pond Press seeks to fill the void by confronting, exposing, and sharing the ignored, overlooked, and disregarded history of Americans of African descent from the founding of this nation until just before the Civil Rights Movement. Rocky Pond Press is particularly interested in publishing works focused on genealogy/family history against the background of a larger community.

If you are a writer of non-fiction, poetry, short stories, historical fiction, or children’s books seeking a publisher, please contact Rocky Pond Press at Info@rockypondpress.com. Fill the void. Build a bridge of understanding. Share the histories and stories of Americans of African descent.
